NEW YORK : The United Nations Security Council has officially welcomed the peace agreement signed between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, calling it a crucial step toward stabilizing the Great Lakes region. The deal, signed in Washington earlier this week under the auspices of international mediation, aims to ease long-standing tensions and end armed confrontations along the shared border.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Security Council emphasized its support for regional dialogue and diplomatic efforts, urging both parties to fully implement the terms of the agreement. The Council underscored the importance of political will and mutual trust, stressing that sustainable peace in the region hinges on cooperation in addressing cross-border security, disarmament of rebel groups, and the protection of civilians.
The Council also commended the role of the United States and the African Union in facilitating the negotiations, and called on all regional actors to support this renewed commitment to peace. As part of the follow-up, the UN encouraged the swift deployment of monitoring mechanisms to ensure the agreement’s success and prevent the resurgence of hostilities.
